Do Electric Cars Need Servicing & Maintenance? Electric Cars Maintenance

An electric car is a Low Maintenance Vehicle compared to an Internal Car Combustion Engine (ICE) Vehicle.

They do not have Engines with moving parts, the Battery-Powered Electric Car does not need to change oil.

Hybrid cars have both electric motors and regular petrol engines, so they still need to change scheduled oils.

BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles) Maintenance require other types of maintenance procedures.

In this article, we will discuss all the general Electric cars maintenance that are required.

However, there are numerous electric cars on the market and each requires maintenance.

For specific Electric Cars Maintenance, please consult your EV owner’s manual.

  • Electric cars have similar SOPs as ICE cars
  • The 12-volt Battery needs special attention & can drain faster
  • Always use the slow charger when charging the EV after a long time
  • While your EV operation reflects driving habits and conditions.
  • EVs require less maintenance than conventional vehicles.
  • Although its moving parts are low, regular maintenance is required.

Battery Maintenance:

Each electric vehicle comes with 2 batteries. One, high voltage main battery. Two, a 12V auxiliary battery. This high voltage main battery drives the electric car. On the other hand, to unlock a 12V battery and open the door, gear shift, etc. Being used on purpose

Each electric vehicle comes with a lithium-ion high voltage battery.

This battery performs best at around 70 degree Fahrenheit when you recharge or drive your vehicle.

For this reason, almost every EV manufacturer has an active battery temperature management system in their vehicle battery coolers and heaters.

Battery cooling can be a liquid-cooled or air-cooled system. Although most modern electric cars do not need to replace the coolant.

you do not need to keep it cool during the planned maintenance period. I believe you never thought an electric car could come with an onboard 12V battery.

This battery helps to start the engine in an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicle. It helps to run electric lights and radios when the engine is off.

In the EV, this 12V battery helps perform a number of critical electrical tasks, including locking and unlocking doors.

The main high voltage battery is a 12V battery that always recharges. Never let this battery run out completely.

You can only damage a 12V battery you need to replace this battery but you won’t be able to open and close the doors, unlock your vehicle, open the trunk, open the charging port, move from vehicle to neutral or park, etc.

Software Updates:

Periodic software updates are available for EV to enhance existing features, provide new features, and improve safety and security. Some EVs require a visit to a dealership for a software update. Others like Tesla also have state-of-the-art software updates that happen automatically.

Air Filter:

Making sure your air filter is clean and tidy prevents harmful debris and dirt from entering the engine. If this maintenance does not run every 12 months or 12,000 miles, you will have to rebuild it as the engine is full.

Windscreen Wipers:

It is important that your windscreen wipers work efficiently as they play an important role in keeping your visibility clear and allowing you to drive safely. They can also scratch your windscreen if worn.

Brake Pads:

The brake pads apply the required pressure and friction to the brake rotors, causing the wheels to slow down. Brake pads are worn or in poor condition, they can form and damage rotors and brake calipers which will reduce the efficiency of your brakes. Maintaining the responsibility of your brakes is essential to ensure the safety of your car.

Radiator Flush:

The radiator is needed to keep your engine cool, by turning the liquid around the engine block. Poor maintenance leads to a build-up of sludge that can cause water pumps to get stuck, resulting in the engine running in hotter water than usual causing it to overheat.

Headlights and taillights should be checked regularly to make sure other cars can see you on the road if the lights lack visibility and are crucial factors to prevent accidents. It is important to check all the lights on the car, as even if only one of your lights is not working, your car may look small to other drivers.

Tires are the most important component in your car as they give the driver grip and stability in difficult situations. Your tires must be in good condition before traveling so that you do not get stuck in rocky terrain while traveling.

Electric Car Maintenance Cost in India

Maintenance costs are not high for EV and can be safely assumed to be Rs 25,000 for 5 years. Therefore, the total cost of owning an Electric Car or EV for 5 years is around Rs 17,13,000.

Check Tire Pressure Saves on Extend Life of Tires and Suspension Bushings.

Every 5000-7000 Miles:

Oil and filter change- Lubricates moving parts and reduces friction. Prolongs the life of the engine. Prevent carbon and sludge buildup in the engine

Every 15000 Miles:

Replace engine air filter – Minimizes engine contaminants.
Inspect transmission fluid – Lubricate shifting of gears. Fluids need to be flushed every 30000 to 40000 miles.
Replace cabin air filter – Keep dust and contaminants out of your car.

Every 30000 Miles:

Engine coolant exchange – keep the engine running efficiently.
Brake fluid flush – Should be flushed every 2 years.
Cooper spark plug replacement – Ensure longer life of an engine. Reduces harmful emissions.
Power Steering fluid flush – Improve handling and performance.

Every 45000 Miles:

Brake service – Pad should be inspected and changed. It is important for safety as well as performance.

Every 60000 Miles:

Battery replacement – Battery loses charge and Strength overtime. Avoid getting stuck somewhere with a dead battery.

Every 75000 Miles:

Timing belt replacement – Timing belt will cause serious engine damage if it breaks.

Electric Cars Maintenance Efficiency

Good maintenance from time to time shows how important it is to maintain all the necessary parts of your vehicle and keep your car at optimum performance.

A safe, reliable car not only gives you peace of mind but also protects you from any unforeseen bills and expensive servicing charges in the future.

To avoid these potentially costly problems for motorists, leasing is becoming a popular option for people who value the pieces of mind while driving on busy roads.

Electric Cars Motor Maintenance

You don’t need to do anything to Maintain the Main Motor and Electric drivetrain of your electric vehicle.

Nowadays, Electric Motors are so reliable that other components of your EVs will Fail first before the motor.

Each Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicle comes with a starter motor which never fails.

Motor and Electric drive units contain lubricating oil. However, almost all EVs do not need to replace this lubricating oil for a lifetime.

For Example, the Motor of any Tesla Car – Model 3, Model S, Model X – Motor does not need to be replaced with lubricating oil.

You may be surprised, the ICE car engine needs to change the oil every 5,000 to 1000 miles, then the EVS Motor does Not Need to Change the Oil at all.

This is because the electric motor is not subject to high heat like the ICE engine. Therefore, the lubricating oil does not break down.

Furthermore, the ICE must lubricate its engine even when the vehicle is sluggish. The EV, on the other hand, only needs to lubricate its motors when Driving an Electric Car.

Shutting Thoughts

For Most Motorists, constant Electric Cars Maintenance and Servicing is a constant hassle and there is more drainage in financing.

Just making sure your car is safe and Roadworthy can be a costly and complicated hassle.

The increase in rent is a huge indicator that many people want to keep their cars away from expensive and timely Electric Cars Maintenance.
